Homeschool Support Services

The Glen Ellyn Public Library welcomes home schooling families in the community. The Library supports these families through programs, materials and services. A valid Glen Ellyn Library card may be required.

Many of our services of interest to Homeschooling families are listed below. If you have a question or suggestion, please contact Glen Ellyn Public Library.

Youth Services Programs

  • story times for children six months through seven years of age
  • an extensive Summer Reading program for ages 2 through eighth grade in Youth Services
  • monthly book discussions
  • special programs such as puppet shows, children's theatre, animal discovery and music
  • yearly program for home schooling parents about the Library's resources

Youth Services Materials

  • Parent and Teacher collection of materials to be used with children
  • extensive collection of book lists to help in selecting age-appropriate books
  • puzzles and puppets to check out for younger children
  • public school textbooks, grades K-8, for use in the library
  • foreign language materials
  • educational computer programs available for check out
  • computers with games and educational software to use in the library
  • Internet access with a parent
  • music cassettes and CDs
  • educational videos available at no charge

Adult Services Programs and Materials

  • separate Young Adult collection for middle school and high school students
  • home school materials at call numbers 371.04 and 371.3
  • computer introduction classes
  • Home Education magazine in print
  • Summer and Winter Reading programs for 9th grade to adults
  • Internet access with a valid Glen Ellyn library card
  • study rooms

Library Services

  • inter-library loan and extensive search for materials
  • classroom collections in which a Youth Services Librarian will assemble books on a particular subject for you to check out
  • special tours and training to introduce students and parents to the library and resources
  • Internet access to the library's catalog, magazines, newspapers and other reference databases from home or in the library
  • personalized reading lists based upon a short survey completed by independent readers

Additional Information

  • Special group or family tours and training in using the catalog may be scheduled with a Youth Services librarian
  • classroom collections may be requested online by e-mailing the Library or by calling the Youth Services department
  • librarians are always available to assist in locating materials
  • computers for word processing
